The Leicaflex SL2 camera
production started in 1974 with camera serial number 1385001 and terminated in
1976 at serial number 1446000.
Full information about exposure was displayed on
the readout in the viewfinder and the sensitivity of the metering had been
increased four fold.
A separate button was supplied to operate the display
illumination. The camera was equipped with a 3mm split image rangefinder screen.
The camera back had a safety lock and was opened by a pulling up the rewind
handle. The SL2 was available in either satin chrome or black finish.
The
mirror had been redesigned allowing lenses of 16 and 19mm focal length to be
used. There was a hot shoe fitted.
The camera shape was more square in
appearance, the back being less curved than its predecessors.
The Leicaflex SL2 could be ordered with the SL's microprism viewscreen. The
redesigned mirror mechanism allowed the camera to use the Minolta-sourced
80-200mm f/4.5 and 24mm f/2.8 as well as the 16mm fisheye lens. The original
version of the 19mm Elmarit-R did not require the SL2's redesigned mirror
mechanism, however the second model of this lens did. Other lenses following
the SL2's introduction also required the additional clearance of the SL2's
mirror box but that could be a much longer discussion.
The shutter of all Leicaflex models including the SL and SL2 are continuously
variable except between 1/30 sec and 1/60 sec, and between 1/4 sec and 1/8 sec.
Catalogue number 10021 for the satin chrome, 10022 for the black chrome finish and 10023 for the MOT.
IMHO the SL2 is the most achieved “all mechanic” reflex camera.
