The Leica I A

The early Leica IA camera,  the top and the bottom plate have a black paint finish and this is the first production camera  bearing the top plate engraving "Ernst Leitz Wetzlar DRP"

The body has a black vulcanite covering.
The camera has a tubular viewfinder and a single accessory shoe.
The shutter speed dial is mounted on a rounded step and the speeds are marked 1/25 - 1/500 plus Z (time exposure).
The speeds are set by lifting the dial after the film as been advanced and placing the desired one in front of a mark engraved on the top plate.
All the screw mount Leica camera will use this system (except the Compurs one).
A collapsible non-interchangeable lens is fitted and an infinity lock provided by a large angled spring attached to the camera front.
Film transport mechanism is of the ratchet type, with a low profile knob for advancing the film combining with shutter tensioning.

Production period is from 1925 to 1936 with 56548 issues with Elmar lenses, 1330 with the Hektor lenses, 713 with Elmax lenses and 144 with Anastigmat lenses, all in 5 cm focal length.

Catalogue code word LEICA.

Illustrated is a 1930 issued camera, with Elmar 3.5/5 cm and yellow filter #1 FILBY, bakelite front cap.
Accompanied by a FOFER range finder with its genuine leather case, a shutter cable release FINOT,
A double cased FILCA container, a solid brown leather case ETRIN, able to contain the camera, the range finder and the double case container.
The genuine instructions for use booklet with a sticker from KOCH-ZURICH, Swiss Leica dealer and representative at this time.
This KOCH –ZURICH is also engraved on the top of the viewfinder.
